Our lawyers have litigated literally hundreds of appellate cases in their legal careers. Our lawyers' experience includes presenting 44 arguments in the Supreme Court of the United States (with a record of 36 wins, 7 defeats, and 1 split decision). Six different lawyers from our firm have argued cases in the Supreme Court. Fourteen of our Supreme Court arguments have occurred since the founding of Robbins, Russell on May 1, 2001. Our lawyers have also presented argument in the United States Courts of Appeals for the District of Columbia, First, Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, Eighth, Ninth, Tenth, Eleventh, and Federal Circuits. Working with co-counsel admitted in the appropriate jurisdictions, we have also litigated in state appellate courts from Alaska to California to Texas to Michigan to Rhode Island, among others, as well as of course the District of Columbia Court of Appeals.
Our partners Larry Robbins and Roy Englert worked in the Office of the Solicitor General. Our lawyers clerked on the Supreme Court of the United States, the Supreme Court of Canada, federal courts of appeals (the D.C., Third, Fourth, Eighth, Ninth, Tenth and Eleventh Circuits), a state appellate court, and federal district courts (the District of Columbia and the Southern District of New York).
Our clients for appellate litigation – all since the founding of the firm – have included a major accounting firm, major airlines, major hedge funds, police officers or police departments in two cities as well as a police union, two major automotive manufacturers, an Internet company, a leading telecommunications provider, leading healthcare providers, insurance companies, indenture trustees, a leading retailer, a federal judge, individuals engaged in protest activities, an individual ERISA plaintiff, and an antitrust plaintiff engaged in the manufacture of transparent tape. We have also filed amicus briefs on behalf of various national trade associations, including the Chamber of Commerce of the United States of America.
In the 2006 - 2009 editions of The Best Lawyers in America -- the first editions ever to list appellate lawyers separately -- three of our partners were listed. Three of our partners were listed among Washington's top appellate litigators for business in Chambers USA, America's Leading Lawyers for Business (2009). Our partners speak regularly at Supreme Court press briefings put on by such organizations as the Chamber of Commerce, the Washington Legal Foundation, the American Enterprise Institute, and the Legal Times. One of our partners has been an Adjunct Professor of Law working with the Appellate Litigation Clinic of the Georgetown University Law Center since 2002.
