On May 1, 2020, the 5th Circuit issued a decision affirming the Eastern District of Texas Court decision to grant Robbins Russell clients Laura and Mark Jordan a new trial. The Jordans were charged in the Eastern District of Texas with violating several federal bribery statutes related to Laura Jordan’s time as the Mayor of Richardson, Texas. Following a nearly month-long jury trial, both were convicted. Shortly after the trial ended, the judge learned that the Courtroom Security Officer had spoken with at least one of the jurors shortly before the jury came back with a unanimous verdict. The Jordans retained Robbins Russell to file a motion with the trial court to vacate the verdicts. The trial court granted the motion and the government appealed. A panel of the 5th Circuit unanimously affirmed the trial court’s ruling. Robbins Russell attorneys Barry Pollack and Hunter Smith wrote the briefs in the trial court and in the Fifth Circuit. Pollack argued the appeal.
